Wait a second, what is ‘NBN’?

When we talk about ‘Australia’s telecommunication network’, we are referring to the landline phone and internet infrastructure that is responsible for how we communicate around the country. In short, Australia is getting rid of the copper network and advancing its system to what is called NBN™ – our new National Broadband Network. Unlike copper, NBN™ is a mixed system that uses high-capacity fibre optic cables, and has been deemed essential for the future of Australia.

Why do we need it?

To run our businesses and country efficiently, we need to rely on fast and dependable landline and internet services. Australia’s existing network is struggling to keep up with the digital demands of the 21st century and NBN™ is a solution and investment by our Government to not only meet, but exceed these demands for future generations to come.

When is it happening?

Right now. Over one million businesses and homes can now access NBN – around one in ten businesses. In just over two years, NBN fibre is expected to reach eight million homes and businesses, with 93% of Australia running on NBN by the year 2020.

What if I do nothing?

Firstly, it’s important to acknowledge the fact that NBN™ isn’t a thing of the future, it is already here with changes being installed in more parts of Australia every day. Unfortunately, ‘doing nothing’ isn’t an option.

What should I be doing?

NBN™ does not sell services directly to the public. This means, in order to ensure your internet, business phone (and phone number) are moved over to the new network when it switches in your area, you will need to contact a provider to discuss your options. If your equipment is compatible, you may just need to move your services over to ensure your business doesn’t skip a beat. If you are running an older phone system, you may need to look at options to upgrade your equipment that suits your business needs.
